#METOO

One of the most important feminist moments on social media has been #MeToo – a movement founded by campaigner Tarana Burke, which went viral after it got picked up by Hollywood actors calling out their experiences of sexual harassment. The sharing of #MeToo posts made it clear just how common such abuse and assault is, and enabled many to tell their stories for the first time. This led to the exposure of sexual abusers and harassers whose behaviour had previously gone unchallenged.

Sexual assault and abuse is highly gendered, so the focus on female survivors and male perpetrators makes sense. However it can erase the way power dynamics also make other marginalized groups particularly vulnerable to abuse. The “carceral feminist” response of turning to the criminal justice system ignores its inherent structural oppression that makes engagement with it dangerous, for example, for survivors who are people of colour, immigrants, poor, queer, or sex workers.
